The Canadian government said it will further cut the intake of foreign students and tighten rules for foreign workers, beginning next year. The additional steps are meant to reduce immigration in response to the strains of rapid population growth, the country’s Immigration Minister Marc Miller said while announcing the new measures.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government is taking more steps to reduce immigration in a country that has buckled under the strain of explosive population growth.

The 2025–2026 study permit intake cap will include master’s and doctoral students who will now have to submit a provincial or territorial attestation letter.
